Due to reduction of energy consumption and hazardous waste, LED lighting has gained a lot of interest in the solid–state lighting industry and is often seen as one of the most promising solution for general illumination in the future. In order to meet end-users’ expectation for replacing conventional lighting, some innovative technologies and approaches are needed.
In this presentation, the technology trends in LED lighting will be addressed and explained. By introducing of these new technologies, we can expand the solid-state lighting market and speed up the SSL adoption rate. Therefore, it will result in a positive effect on global carbon emissions.

US DOE Energy Star Program for Solid State Lighting went into effect since Sep08.
It is more than an energy standard but also directly address the quality of LED Lighting luminaire.
Consequently, high flux output, high quality of light and high reliability LED components are highly needed for LED lighting applications.
Not all LED are created equal, poor performance LED will not be able to meet the luminaire requirements per Enery Star.
Cree has been taking the lead and created the first Lighting Class LED that meets or exceed Energy Star requirements.
Lighting Class LED provides the values of energy saving, maintenance avoidance, excellent quality of light and flexibility of design to customers. |

The HB LED (high brightness light emitting diode) industry is in the midst of a dramatic transformation from small production fabs to large-scale manufacturing facilities. Traditional LED manufacturers are finally starting to see large-scale application of HB LEDs especially in outdoor lighting. More recently the industry has seen the vertical integration of FPD (flat panel display) manufacturers into the HB LED market with the introduction of BLU (back-lighting unit) LED TVs and monitors. This trend is expected to continue into applications such as street lamps, outdoor displays and indoor lighting. Customers participating in the above segments are responsible for driving a major paradigm shift in the requirements for MOCVD epitaxy from high-cost, manually-operated machines to automated, high-productivity, repeatable production tools.
This shift in customer manufacturing has led to new challenges for MOCVD equipment suppliers in a number of areas including productivity, reliability and factory integration. This presentation will highlight how MOCVD technology advances are expected to reduce LED manufacturing costs over the next several years to enable widespread adoption of solid state lighting.

High power near UV LEDs with wavelengths from 365nm to 410nm were realized with an external quantum efficiency from 12% to 45% for 365nm and 410nm, respectively. First, the LED epitaxial layers were grown on a template structure consisting of GaN on sapphire. Then, in subsequent steps we removed the template structure, including sapphire, leaving only the LED epitaxial layers on top of an alloy base as a complete device.
This method enabled a short wavelength only-AlGaN structure close to 365nm to be grown on a thick GaN layer for high crystalline quality. Then, the GaN layer was completely removed so no absorption by GaN occurred. We show that the vertical LED design coupled with the silicon sub-mount package gives very good reliability, suitable for many high power epoxy and polymer curing applications. UV LEDs are proven to be a good replacement for high power mercury lamps.

The Creative Technologies Development of magnetic-field enhance LED(MLED).
Developing creative technologies is a key point to help Taiwan LED industry as well as LED lighting to break through the patent limits, and also the inferiority of low value-added labor production in the future.
ITRI sets 200lm/W efficiency as the goal of LED device and develops the relative advanced technologies from epitaxy, such as non-polar GaN substrate, GaN substrate surface process, method of high temperature, normal pressure and high growing rate to produce GaN thick film, etc. Besides, ITRI own an unique technology which is called magnetic-field enhance LED(MLED). It can enhance the output efficiency more than 20% theoretically and has systematic patent portfolio at the same time. In the hope of constructing high quality and intelligent lighting environment and industry in the future Taiwan, ITRI has developed the high CRI white LED, and intelligent controlling system to establish the innovative technology for LED lighting. |

World initial 8-inch silicon wafer processed with MEMS technology is applied to LED package. Owing to the high thermal conductivity property of the silicon material, excellent thermal management is achieved and matches high power LED applications extensively.
Moreover, wafer level phosphor coating with good uniformity control and well designed optical lenses enhance light extraction to target optical performance. The LED package has robust structure and highly reliable qualities. VisEra makes the mass production of the wafer level LED package attainable via current existing semiconductor fab infrastructures. |
