The Open NAND Flash Interface Workgroup (ONFI) formed in May of 2006. In less than eight months, ONFI published their first specification that sets a baseline for NAND protocol allowing for interoperability in the industry. ONFI is now building on the foundation of the 1.0 specification to deliver a higher speed NAND interface. Today, read performance and concurrent write workloads suffer from a signficant bottleneck: the interface between the host and the NAND. The ONFI Workgroup is developing a DDR-based high speed NAND protocol that eliminates this bottleneck and establishes a 10 year roadmap for increasing NAND performance. Come and hear how the more than 50 members of the ONFI Workgroup are leading the way to higher NAND performance. |

The new Windows VistaTM features three different methods to accelerate the performance of PC.
Windows SuperfetchTM is a new and smart way to load the most possible files or data that user might use into the main memory or cache, which is implemented by NAND flash memory.
An External Memory Devices (EMD) is utilized by Windows ReadyBoostTM to use additional memory device as cache to increase the speed the loading of application. This EMD could be any storage device with high performance in Random read and write, such as USB flash drive, SD or CF cards or others.
A new Hybrid Hard Disk Drive with embedded OneNAND flash inside of HDD can be used to expedite the system booting and application software launching up. The software to support Hybrid HDD is called Windows ReadyDriveTM.
Other NAND applications, including Turbo Memory and Solid-State Disk, are also introduced in the presentation.

Since 1997, SSD (formerly FFD from msystems) has been deployed globally as drop-in hard disk drive replacements in the Military and Aerospace sectors. Extreme conditions of ruggedness, high reliability, shock, vibration, humidity, altitude and temperature had to be met. Hard disk drives do not meet these requirements. SSD was the solution of choice even at the cost of more than $100 per 1GB. Since then the market has expanded to applications such as Telecom who couldn’t take the risk of the mechanical hard drives, even when the premium of flash over HDD was still high.
In 2007 the adoption of SSD over HDD has begun for the Mobile PC market. The cost came down sufficiently to enable SSDs for the road warriors. These are the early adopters in the thin & light notebook segment for whom the cost premium over an HDD warrants the SSD advantage of durability, reliability, high system performance and low power consumption.
As the main barrier to mass market adoption is still the cost of NAND and higher capacity, a migration from binary NAND to MLC NAND is expected. MLC flash has a reputation of compromises in terms of accuracy and performance. However, MLC from SanDisk overcomes these pitfalls and will ensure further development of the SSD Mobile PC market to the mainstream consumer in 2008. |
